This thesis examines the British public’s understanding and engagement with Finland during the Second World War, from 1939-1944. Within this time frame, Finland faced a number of different and difficult positions given the context of the global war in which it played a part. Initially, as a victim of Soviet aggression in the wake of the Nazi-Soviet Pact in 1939, and the Soviet ‘Sphere of Influence’, Finland conducted a defensive war which would come to be known as the ‘Winter War’. Later, in retaliation for Soviet action, the Finns joined Germany as a ‘co-belligerent’ during Operation Barbarossa in 1941 and through to September 1944 in what would come to be known as the ‘Continuation War’. Fighting between the Soviet Union and Finland came to an end when the two parties made peace in August and September 1944. The result of this initial armistice was the forced retreat of German troops from Finland within a fortnight, causing friction and conflict between the two previous comrades-in-arms, a period which is known as the ‘Lapland War’. This thesis examines the changing relationship of the British public towards Finland over these five years and how these changes were conveyed in Parliament, through the press, and finally by the people themselves in select diary entries from the Mass Observation survey. |
