Abstract:
Smartphones and tablets are now playing very import roles in our daily lives. With the fast development of smart devices, more and more tasks, including enterprise and medical applications become available on those smart devices. As a result, tablets tend to replace laptops to finish most of the ordinary tasks. However, it is still difficult for programmers to write software on smartphones and tablets due to the screen size and limitations of on-screen keyboards. In this thesis, a new code editor (SaucePad) is designed to enable programmers to write codes on smartphones and tablets more efficiently. It features a structured code editor and a command keyboard that allows programmers to write code by tapping commands. Our evaluation shows that SaucePad can significantly reduce the times of clicking or tapping when writing code on a touch screen compared to other traditional code editors which highly rely on textual code input. Also, SaucePad is language independent, and editor designers can add new programming languages to SaucePad using JSON configuration.
