Abstract:
Auckland's population growth and densification is causing problems of overcrowding in schools. For the purpose of this thesis, the focus will be applied to the Auckland central city region where schools no longer have the ability to sprawl and expand, so an alternative school model is needed to help alleviate overcrowding in schools. An urban school model is a viable solution to this problem. Through the evolution of the classroom, in terms of its physical form, we can see a change in learning style from that of a 'teacher centric' Model to that of an 'enquiry based' learning model. Students are encouraged to learn through discovery and interaction, much like the principles applied to innovation centres and architectural studios. This new style of education provides a good framework where industry and education could mix and develop together. The Wynyard precinct urban framework plan is going to be Auckland's largest urban rejuvenation development and is set to become the leading innovation hub within the Asia-Pacific. The plan has very little mention of new schools for a community that consists of 4000 people. This thesis looks to provide a potential architectural solution to implement an industry-education urban school model that situates itself within the Wynyard precinct. The architectural solution will be a symbolic icon to represent the innovation and education industries.
