dc.description.abstract This thesis is a study of thirteen choral works based on a range of texts on the subject of the Virgin Mary from different historical periods and geographical places. These are analysed in terms of the musical language employed by composers in their interpretation of the text. The thesis and the artistic decisions for a recital of the works informed each other. The recital and thesis together fulfil the requirements of a Masters degree in conducting. en
