Abstract:
This thesis follows a constructive narrative promoted where the use of light as a vehicle to synthesise two contrasting elements; namely, spiritual contemplation and construction methodologies that incorporate timber. Light is used to do so by complying with both the measurable (built form) and the intangible (spiritual experience). I aim to portray the dialectical balance of the physical and metaphysical by the use of the sanctuary, "The Introspective Pavilion", which is a 1:1 full-scale installation. The notion of catering a space to the human spirit is both a historical and contemporary phenomena, and modern research illustrates the requirement self-presence for overall wellbeing. There has been an exploration into spiritually dedicated spaces, and studies in fabrication practice alongside precedential studies that illustrate the use of reciprocal methodologies. This methodology is where each beam supports and is, in turn, supported by all of the others. The use of geometry and symmetry applied not only adheres to the reciprocal technique but create a homogeneous aesthetic, calming the mind and promoting a tranquil experience with one's surroundings. The process of construction includes a combination of computer-aided design and digital fabrication technologies, alongside timber junction schemes, longevity engineering, and detailing. The materiality of timber drives the project and distinguishes it from lightweight aluminium precedents. Usually, timber lends itself more towards a denser construction. Here, it is pushed to challenge the power of lightness, within both gravity and transparency. This surface is composed of sloping walls which counteract one another’s weight, thus challenging natural gravity forces, producing perceived weightlessness that enthrals the eye. Furthermore, light is enticed to pierce through the structures perforated surface. Striking a relationship between light and shadow that establishes a sense of mysticism and ethereality for the visitor. The location of the installation is at Henderson High School, as a meditative structure used by the school attendees and the broader community. The pavilion contributes a precedent for further community groups, providing a space tailored to the fundamental human precondition of introspection.
