Abstract:
The work of recent years in the area of Youth Justice has presented continual challenges to SLT. Language disorders cannot be seen to be simple, nor separate from notions we have not traditionally involved in SLT work, such as poverty, trauma, emotional and mental health, and rehabilitation and restorative processes. It also prompts us to understand much more about other professional work and cultures, including criminal law and its judges and advocates, social work in its many manifestations, police, corrections ,alternative education and youth health. This presentation will discuss recent and current research in the area in NZ and other jurisdictions, and indicate how it is, or should be, causing us to re-think what we need to know and how we need to operate.
