Abstract:
ISSN: 2350-3165 This publication involves an artist also writing, and a writer also drawing and taking photographs. The content further develops my interests in accented materiality through its emphasis on imbrications and constructed forms presented as a type of 'stuttered narrative' carrying social and quasi-philosophical implications for a composite, mixed, and inconsistent world. I write about the copiousness and fabricational inventiveness of Cheng’s practice, and about the accumulative materiality in the collages and architectural practice of ex-pat architect M.K. Smith. What I call my ‘un-illustrations’ set old school ink drawing and comic-book sequencing to work on the ‘push and pressure’ of a densely textured world. My image content comes from European, North American and NZ locations. My contributions as author: “I dreamt of becoming a naturalist and exploring the world: interview with Xin Cheng by Allan Smith,” p13-18.; “Collated by Allan Smith, while thinking of the inclusion of everything”, DOCument Of MOMO: continuities/differentiations/collaged intensities”, “Xin Cheng: addressing the ‘parliament of things’ and helping in the kitchen’, “Un-illustrations and amateur travel photography: sunken understructures of thought and anachronistic textures of the real”, “Cities photographed, Un-illustration sources”, p93-155 inclusive; includes text, photographs, drawings. I was the text editor for this publication; Layla Tweedie-Cullen was the image editor and publication designer.
