The challenges associated with promoting student engagement and achievement are both plentiful and diverse. They are also more problematic in large lecture courses involving hundreds of students with high variation in students' academic preparedness and motivation. In this address, I will describe these challenges using a case example of such course, and how learning analytics were used (retroactively to understand and proactively to intervene) to meet those challenges. In doing so, I hope to offer some helpful insights and suggestions for how others might use learning analytics to promote student engagement and achievement. |
