Abstract:
The space radiation environment is complex and substantively different from anything on Earth. Biological effects are potentially catastrophic but our current knowledge is very limited. There are implications for multiple aspects of mission planning, from vehicle design to crew selection to mission duration, and mission design is challenging when so many unknowns exist. There is no single “magic bullet” countermeasure; a multifactorial approach is required.
