Abstract:
Those of us who developed a love of reading as children probably remember having stories read to us. Whether we remember a specific story or the time spent with someone special as they shared a favourite story we developed a love of books that has stayed with us over the years. Although reading stories to children is often seen as supporting early language development and as a foundation for literacy skills it is not commonly recognised as a tool for developing mathematical understandings. This article looks at the power of children’s literature in developing young children’s mathematical knowledge and thinking.
