Abstract:
Since 2013, on a day in late summer when the tide is right and weather allows, HOOPLA facilitate a horde of people to take to the water in a melange of craft. The Flotilla Whau instigates a temporal engagement with the Whau River and operates as both art work and community event. In 2013 the Flotilla Whau was inaugurated as part of "Rosebank", a project curated for the Auckland Art Festival by Marcus Williams. In 2017 the Flotilla Whau was part of the event programme for HEAT: Solar Revolutions, the third Oceanic Performance Biennial, based at Te Uru Art Gallery, Auckland and other locations. Through annual iterations between, the Flotilla Whau has grown in participation. Producing a memorable image of the potential of this waterway, evoking both past and future conditions, the event brings Whau users together, stimulating connection and ongoing discussion.
