Abstract:
Being independent, living independently, and remaining in one’s own home within the community have been reported as key desires for older people and those with disabilities. 1,2 However, while this concept of “aging in place” is a key desire for older people, it may also place a large burden on family members, friends, and caregivers. In New Zealand, the proportion of people involved in the care of older people is substantial. According to the 2012 NZ General Social Survey, 27% of people under 65 years said they or their partner supported a family member aged 65+ who didn’t live with them.3 As such, there is a need in New Zealand to support community dwelling older people to live independently for longer, while also relieving some of the burden on the people who care for them.
