Abstract:
Testing mandates and reading proficiency requirements in the state of Iowa have grave consequences for the children and teachers in elementary classrooms. Strict control of what counts as reading, what counts as good teaching, and what counts as research and data de-legitimize and diminish whole language philosophy and practice.
