Abstract:
Dancing Sculpture was a programme of three works presented alongside the Brave New World Exhibition of art from the 1930s at the NGV Melbourne. Carol Brown was invited by Professor Rachel Fensham (The University of Melbourne) to recreate Gertrud Bodenwieser's 'The Demon Machine' (1924) with students from the Victoria College of the Arts, to perform her solo homage to Bodenwieser, 'Acts of Becoming' (1995, 2017), and to premier the film 'Releasing Her Archive' made through her collaboration with The New Zealand Dance Company, Shona Dunlop MacTavish and Thomas Kampe drawing on archival materials from the legacy of Gertrud Bodenwieser (1890-1959). Situated on Level 3 outside the exhibition, these works were presented through the NGV's public programmes and were associated with the One Day Symposium in the Gallery, 'Leap into the Modern'.
