Abstract:
This is my personal response to engaging with the diverse autoethnographic chapters in this text, to consider questions of culture. I had been fortunate to receive a grant to attend a three day ‘U21 emerging researchers workshop’ in Chile, 2017, on multiculturalism and interculturality. During the workshop, expectations of what to do, think about, and feel were buzzing in the air. I am a critical autoethnographer at heart. Telling these six tales of the recent visit to Chile, I reflect on some of the questions of culture that resonated with my own experiences. Was I a ‘bad-ass adventurer’ or a vulnerable woman? How did the ‘unmarked marker’ of white skin and the knottiness problematic of privilege impact on this experience? Am I too old to be an emerging researcher? I ask the reader to consider what happens when we identify with the personal stories gathered, written, and shared in this book.
