Abstract:
Photovoice is an innovative participatory action research method that uses photography and interviewing techniques to communicate issues and initiate change. The photovoice method encourages participants’ to reflect on research questions, to express themselves creatively by taking photographs to answer these questions, then participate in group discussions of photos. This paper describes how we incorporated whanaungatanga (kinship) and manaakitanga (hospitality/caring) into our photovoice methods to ensure that they were appropriate for use with Maori. There will also be a second paper and exhibition which present the results of this project.
