dc.description.abstract Port facilities are very important to the economy of a region or even a country. Even though the port facilities are not considered to be structures with special post disaster functions, their seismic design importance level is high. The primary concern of a terminal wharf design is to maintain a reasonable operation during the post-earthquake emergency period. In this thesis, a study was carried out to assess the limitation and reliability of the pseudo static analysis method for the seismic design of a tie back quay wall. The limitations typically include soil behaviour modelling and the interaction between soils and structures The performance of an existing bulkhead quay wall originally designed to static condition has been assessed based on the requirements from ASCE/COPRI 61-14. Design modification of this exiting quay wall has been carried out but failed to come up with a cost effective design solution. An alternative wharf structure design - a traditional pile-supported wharf platform integrated with revetment slope has been proposed as the final solution to replace the wharf bulkhead quay wall design. en
