Abstract:
This report will look at the concept of E tirotiro haere ana i te ātea i waenga i ā Rangi raua ko Papa me te whenua which in English means exploring the space between the earth and the sky which was sparked by my interest in Tuai and Titere. Tuai and Titere were Māori men who went to England in 1818, and whilst in England they were struck down by a serious illness. A clergyman, named George Bull took care of them and gave them ink, quills and paper to draw with during their recovery. Tuai and Titere were motivated out of the fear that they would die there and drew vehicles for their wairua to return to New Zealand. Tuai drew a series of waka and Titere drew a series of manu aute. These drawings sparked my interest in seeing After seeing these drawings done by Tuai and Titere I became interested and curious about what occupied in the space between Papatuanuku and Ranginui.
