Abstract:
This thesis explores common themes of photography’s role in memory, its relationship with time, and looks for other concepts that help to form a language used with photography in an art-making context. The first section introduces an artefact, researching its history and significance. This artefact directly relates to the body of work that makes up my final submission. I will consider the journey of the object, both physical, (researching the artefact) and in reproduction (photography). Looking at the semiotics of the photographic image with a focus on expanding the index. Deleuze and Guattari’s concept of ‘Minor Literature’ and how this could apply to an art practice is investigated. Consideration is given to the relationship that the photograph has with the institution of the Museum and a connection to Surrealism is explored, applying a similar semiotic approach.
