Melanpoly noun A feeling of mournful or deep sadness for Polynesia’s lost history. To any Samoan who has been brought up in the Fa’asamoa or the Samoan way, regardless of whether or not you were born on the Island (Samoa or elsewhere), cultural values and customs breathe heavily into our daily lives. This has affected the way we think, act, speak, and has also contributed to how we have shaped our worldview. Personally, my journey growing up in a bicultural world has been a challenge to say the least. The breakdown of the migrant family life compared to a Western family structure is intensely contrasting. This is due to the deeply rooted connections that migrants have with their homeland and culture, but migration is not a modern concept to Samoans; in fact, when we trace our connection to other Polynesian Islands, the similarities in culture, language and customs are extremely evident that our ancestors have all come from the same place, and have spread throughout the Pacific; today however, migration into another society with different systems have caused cultures to change by way of assimilation and colonisation, giving way for histories to be forgotten and cultures to be transformed. A deep sadness in my opinion, the feeling of loss, encouraging myself and many other communities to search for these lost stories in hopes to find a sense of self in a society that requires one to be like everyone else. |
