dc.description.abstract This book chapter argues that scholars have overlooked the dynamic of revolutionaries’ own attempts to write and practice history during the Revolution of 1789. Contemporaries’ engagement with history, I argue, not only prefigured democratic media culture, it exposed the role of politically-inflected uses of history in redefining truth about the past and understanding the shape of the present. en
