This particular composition is inspired by research into the coded ratios which can be deduced from the interior architecture of the Gothic cathedral Notre dame de Chartres. The work uses sacred geometry and mediating ratios which I derived from research into medieval cathedral design. The title of the piece is suggestive of the human fixation with geometric proportion as a manifestation of the meta-physical, which the ancient Greeks called Logos. The piece is completely notated and ready for an ensemble to play. The piece is designed to be played by seven musicians positioned equidistantly around a circle delineated by a septagram. The septagram is conceptually, a geometric distillation of the gothic Cathedral. In order to invoke the spirit of the cathedral, the musicians would perform positioned on the seven points, the seven intervals of the nave elevation. Conceptually it is intended to invoke the spirit of the cathedral. The piece was composed with an accompanying fixed media track and as a further development of the work, it was intended to process this element with the acoustic properties of the physical cathedral space. This could be done using computer modelling expertise to 'model' the acoustic qualities of Chartres Cathedral. This 'ambisonic' expertise is available locally through an acoustic consultancy which, being an architect, I have a professional relationship with. I can provide a three dimensional computer model of the interior of Chartres cathedral for the acoustic processing. |
