Abstract:
Diverse immigrants have transformed the demographic landscape of Aotearoa New Zealand. My research used a life story methodological approach to explore Chinese immigrant parents’ identity choices for themselves and their children. Identity theories, such as the work of Stuart Hall, were used to conceptualise the study and to analyse the data. The participants’ choices demonstrated complex politics of identity, revealing their nuanced sense of (non)belonging and in/exclusion, as well as their aspirations for children’s cultural heritages.
