dc.description.abstract Explicit knowledge, or knowledge about language, is important because it helps learners pay attention to language and this facilitates learning. In the past, grammar explanation was usually separate from the rest of a language lesson, but increasingly research evidence suggests that a focus on grammar will be most effective in contexts where students are using the language to communicate. There are many ways of drawing learners' attention to grammar. For example, when a teacher wants to introduce learners to rules or patterns in a language they can either give them the rules (deductive approach), or encourage them to “induce” or work these out for themselves (inductive approach). These are just some of the options available for explaining grammar and a differentiated approach may be most effective. Teachers also need to think about what aspects of language are important to explain or focus on. Those features of language that are already partially acquired by learners may, for example, be best. Grammar explanation may be more effective for adolescent or older learners, who are more likely to have developed analytic skills, than for younger learners. It is important to remember that explaining grammar does not usually lead to immediate results in terms of students using the targeted forms correctly, rather, it may take time for the effects of teaching about language to be evident. en
