dc.description.abstract This paper discusses the benefits that literature (in this case the poem) might contribute to language learning, drawing on research literature and understanding of second language acquisition theory. Three poems are presented, showcasing how these poems were effectively used in beginner primary school and weekend school Japanese language classes. The authors hope that this paper will encourage wider understanding and discussion about how authentic poems (i.e. written for first language speakers of the target language) and those created for language learners, can be used by teachers for engaging and effective language and intercultural learning. The paper represents a collaboration between two teachers of Japanese and a lecturer teaching in the area of literature in the language classroom. en
