Abstract:
Bipolar affective disorder (BPAD) is a mood disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of depression or mania. It is a lifelong illness and can cause significant disruption to individuals, their families, workplace, and society during an episode of mood disorder. This chapter presents information on the epidemiology and etiology of BPAD, an outline of psychopharmacological and nonpharmacological management options for BPAD, including strategies beyond the first level of treatment. It also highlights the integral role of the pharmacist as part of the multidisciplinary team.
