dc.description.abstract This chapter discusses the basic science of reactions at an interface and the applied science of a practical device and its utilization in the field. It describes a personal journey that illustrates how basic scientific threads unite along the path from discovery to product, from the surface reactions of a semiconducting oxide, to sensor development, to instrument development, to application, and finally to big data. Low‐cost instruments based on simple sensors are only truly low‐cost if the other costs are also low. Methods for management of large‐scale networks of air quality monitoring instruments, and particularly for data validation automatically to detect instrument drift, are being developed and have led to further commercial development. Gas‐sensitive resistors based on heated semiconducting oxides are in many ways “cheap and cheerful”: they are relatively easy and inexpensive to make and the signals are large and easily measured. en
