Abstract:
The Entity is a proposed theory surrounding the subconscious influence of how one depicts certain objects or forms through a creative medium. It is a manifestation of various personal experiences and emotions, and the ‘physical’ appearance of the Entity differs with each individual. This essay focuses on the Entity belonging to the author, Claire Docking, and is used as a reference point for the bases of a theory that is able to be indefinitely expanded upon once Entity’s in other individuals are uncovered. The origin of the Entity lies within the subconscious, a manifestation of the desires of the Id and the will of the Super-Ego. It is a reflection of the Super-Ego’s expelling of emotions and yearnings that threaten the psyche’s journey to achieve the ‘ideal-self’. Thought the revealing of the Entity may be different across individuals, in Claire’s case it has come about from personal use of medication to control various psychological issues that have impacted her daily life, and the consequential side-effects of such medication, primarily involving the suppression of the sex-drive. The childhood numbing towards horrific imagery and pornography has attributed to the physical appearance of her Entity, which has allowed Claire to capitalize on the discussions surrounding the concept of the “Monstrous-Female”. It must be noted that this essay is a case study on a single individual, it is hoped that upon reading this essay that other Entities will be realised in other individuals, thus broadening the pool and allowing deeper study into the Entity phenomenon
