Abstract:
The following thesis will examine two great modern jazz pianists, Joey Calderazzo and Aaron Parks, through detailed transcription and analysis of compositions and improvised solos. Source material has been collected from several recordings from each artist, stretching from debut CDs and sideman recordings, to newly released material. This thesis is driven by the desire to study two substantial influences on my musical personality and by the hope, through total immersion, that I will better understand what makes each of these artists unique within the category of “modern jazz” players.
