This thesis aims to investigate the relationship between architecture and other
design disciplines. It investigates the design philosophies of fashion designer Issey
Miyake and sculptor Isamu Noguchi, as a procedure that compositionally analyses
their techniques as a method of designing architectural spaces.
The research methodology began by designing in the mode of Miyake and Noguchi
to produce an object that had not been made before by the designers. A sculptural
garden was made concerning pleating and origami in the mode of Miyake. A pair
of pants were made in the mode of Noguchi with contrasting materials and shapes
which was true to the dichotomies in Noguchi’s work.
This methodology was likened to a Haiku in which endless iterations are created
based on the same 5-7-5 syllable constraints. The functions on the site were split
into seven elements where this process was employed. This created a ‘Haiku of
Architecture’ which formed the brief for the design of the seven elements on the
site.
This thesis observes the similarities of the interdependency that architecture
and other design disciplines have, and how the elements on site bear the same
relationship to one another and cohesively work as a collaborative design studio
and residence. |
