Abstract:
InBetween is a research which interrogates the
effectiveness of Auckland CBD’s social, physical and experiential
triggers of the streetscape from the eyes of a walker, dweller and/
or meanderer. It aims to elevate the quality of city living with
proposals that are more akin to the reality of present day cities.
Taking into consideration the matters of everyday rhythms by
habit and attachment by the use of appropriate scaling and
attention to detail.
The Inbetween starts off with the understanding of the
experiential inbetween. The routine of home to work, fragments
of time used for burdened responsibilities, the harsh margins of
the public private boundaries and lack of attachment within the
concrete jungle. The experiential inbetween is to create moments
of pause amongst scattered experiences and elevate the mundane
activity. The physical inbetween are the gaps that are found within
the city. Alleyways, backstreets, between buildings etc…Neglected
spaces that are underutilized for its unappealing aesthetics or
awkward shape and size.
With the theory as foundation, the Inbetween takes the form of a
laundromat within Auckland CBD. It pulls together fragments of
time used for daily responsibilities in an atmosphere that becomes
strictly human scaled and human oriented. As mundane and
ordinary the function of laundromat maybe, willingly takes a step
back within the fasting paced city and aloneness is found.
