This written component for the degree of DMA is based on four works, which I have specially commissioned from composers associated with the University of Auckland: 1. Eve de Castro-Robinson - Knife Apple Sheer Brush for amplified solo flute; 2. Samuel Holloway - en abyme for solo flute; 3. John Elmsly-..formettel for flute and electronics 4. John Rimmer- metamusic for flute and piano. The opportunity to commission, research, document and perform the four flute works has combined my interest in New Zealand contemporary music by closely connecting my DMA thesis and performance research. A major outcome ofthe research is a documented "writing-up" of my collaboration with the composers, the performance practices these works involve, and the shared history oftheir genesis. This unique opportunity has given me a valuable insight into the process and shaping of the compositions, and influenced my performance choices. It has allowed me to extend my research beyond what is usually required of a performer. Having given the premiere performance of each piece, I examine the works both analytically and descriptively in the context of the composer's works to date, and against the wider horizon of contemporary flute music in New Zealand. The culmination of my written and performance research is a professional recording of all four works included in the thesis. |
