dc.description.abstract Viewing Design Education from the standpoint of the Sociology of Knowledge, with continual references to the field of Critical Education Theory, this thesis charts the evolution of architectural theorising from the Thirteenth Century to the present, showing how it has been continually shaped by the exigencies of practice and the shifting developments of capitalist production. It takes a critical cultural standpoint to interrogate the efficacy of normative theories of design education, showing how they emerge from the needs of capitalist production and how their implementation contains inherent contradictions between espoused and practiced values which are the source of an ongoing crisis in the profession. It suggests that design education has an important role to play in resolving this crisis. The thesis promotes the notion of education as an instrument of social transformation. It criticises current strategies and social structures of production based as they are upon an ethos of hierarchy and competition, and suggests in their place democratic work processes which implicitly require a progressively democratic form of education. Outlining how current educational forms reproduce existing social structures through the operation of the hidden curriculum, and citing examples of an alternative Community Design process, it presents a case for a transformative design education, operating from a different pedagogical standpoint in which the relationship between theory and practice is more democratically articulated.
