This thesis describes the results of an investigation into the effects of low temperatures and high strain rates on the mechanical properties of high purity zinc single crystals. The experimental programme may be divided into two parts: (1) Developing a hydraulic loading machine to apply a fast- rising compressive stress and developing a technique for the production of single crystals of zinc. (2) Executing a testing programme aimed at contributing further to the knowledge of the mechanisms of the various deformation modes of zinc single crystals. As a result of the present investigation the following conclusions can be drawn concerning the effects of temperature and. strain rate on the compression testing of zinc single crystals: BASAL SLIP: (1) The work hardening rate in dynamic tests at 77°K is lower than for static tests at 77°K. (2) Corrected for the temperature dependence of the shear modulus the work hardening rate in dynamic tests is the same at 77°K and 294°K. (3) Static prestrain lowers the dynamic critical resolved shear stress. TWINNING: (4) The resolved shear stress for twinning decreases with decreasing temperature and increasing strain rate. PYRAMIDAL SLIP: (5) The initial work hardening rate decreases with decreasing temperature and increasing fetrain rate. |
