dc.description.abstract Miniature depictions of ships sailing around the inside mouth of Attic black-figure symposion vessels can convey multiple meanings, including evoking the journey through life. A fragment of a late archaic bilingual kylix in the Allard Pierson Museum, Amsterdam, provides the starting-point for a discussion of the motif.
