This project aims to improve the existing In-Situ Resin Transfer Moulding (RTM) system established at the Centre for Advanced Composite Materials (CACM). Mould used for manufacturing the composite panels was modified to incorporate thermocouples to better understand and control the polymersiation temperatures. Pure nylon panels were successfully manufactured during the early stages of the project before moving on to carbon fibre reinforced nylon (CF/PA6) panel. Several CF/PA-6 panels were made using the modified mould. Investigations were carried out to identify the issues that resulted in the sub-par quality of the panels made, and the issues were addressed. A second mould was designed and machined to use in the In-Situ RTM system. CF/PA 6 panels were manufactured at different injection flow rates. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), visual inspection and microscopy confirmed the quality of the panels. Three-point bending tests were carried out on specimens obtained from each panel, in accordance with ASTM D7264 standards. The flexural modulus value obtained from the experiments matched closely with literature values with a deviation of less than 11%. The details of the experiments and the findings from the tests are also discussed. |
