Abstract:
This research sought to gain greater understanding of trauma-informed practices of Dance Movement Therapy (DMT) in New Zealand (NZ). Specifically, how might we sustain and increase the presence of trauma-informed DMT in NZ? In order to investigate this more fully, the form and contexts trauma-informed DMT is currently practiced in Aotearoa were explored. Using a qualitative methodology, data was collected through a semi-structured interview with an experienced professional DMT. Thematic analysis highlighted key areas to consider including therapist self-care, the existence of trauma-informed DMT within wider systems, advantages to multidisciplinary and collaborative ways of working, and considerations for an emerging bi-cultural practice. Based on these findings, recommendations are made for sustaining and increasing the presence of DMT in NZ and implications for further research discussed.
