Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the academic achievement of Māori students, in particular, a group of 24 Year 7 and 8 students enrolled in two kura kaupapa Māori schools. In kura, te reo Māori1 is the main language of communication and curriculum instruction. Discussion in this chapter unpacks the TransAcquisition effect on the kura students’ reading performance in English, which resulted in achievement levels well beyond what would be expected among similarly abled English medium students.
