dc.description.abstract This chapter focuses on rural places as the context for critical social gerontology. Critical gerontology is a meta-framework for challenging power and social injustice in ageing societies. The framework considers ageing to be a social construct that is shaped by societal forces and characteristics, which is an important expansion on the social gerontology literature (Dannefer and Phillipson, 2010). We illustrate the role of critical rural gerontology by drawing on Fraser’s (1998) social justice framework and consider the distribution of resources (such as, material and social resources or community resources including access to services), recognition (such as social status, cultural visibility through social participation and cultural worth through valued social roles) and representation (in research and policy making processes) of older people in rural areas.
