The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a short course of writing instruction on participants’ writing processes and written production. The participants were studying English as a second language at Intermediate level at a tertiary institution in Auckland. A control group of 34 participants undertook pretesting and posttesting only. An experimental group of 34 participants did the same, but also took part in five writing lessons totaling 10 hours of instruction over the space of 2½ weeks. The study also examined the participants’ reported patterns of writing strategy usage. The writing program was designed as a blend of genre-based and process writing approaches. Genre knowledge was explicitly studied and practiced. Additionally, writing strategies were introduced, practiced and reflected on during the course. Results show that the writing program was effective in improving the participants’ writing scores in the areas of genre-appropriate discourse structure, and in text cohesion and coherence. The writing program did not benefit articipants’ grammatical and lexical ability. Patterns of writing strategy se were found to be similar to those of unskilled writers. The writing program had no effect on participants’ reported strategy use or their attitudes towards writing in English. No correlation was found between participants’ grammatical proficiency and subsequent improvement in writing ability. |
