Abstract:
Most of network measurements and analyses have been done at net- work and transport level, to measure bandwidth, retransmission rate, download rate and other metrics. In this project, we have investigated lightweight network measurements of metrics that could be useful to ISPs, thereby it will measure network performance at application level. To do that, we collected a few network traces at the University of Auckland gateway. After analysing these network traces, we proposed a set of measurement metrics for different applications such as DNS and HTTP. We considered the university as a small ISP, we worked with ITS at University of Auckland, to understand their needs in network measurements and set of applications that they are interested in. Because of time constraints, we only able to measure performance of DNS, TCP and HTTP. We have discovered some very interesting output for DNS and HTTP. We will introduce the architecture of the network monitoring system, how the network traces have been captured. We present a set of measurement metrics such as HTTP compression and EDNS ratios for a specific type of applications, and we analyse network traces based on the proposed metrics.
