Abstract:
This thesis asks how floating architecture can enhance access and enjoyment of the Waitematā Harbour.
The research begins with a review of the social and environmental concerns, this thesis is attempting to answer how floating architecture can address these concerns. The thesis also aims to uncover the hidden and intangible values of Waitematā Harbour, including its culture & heritage value and marine resources. The research then expands into a discussion theory about the importance of floating architecture. Floating architecture principles are then analyzed, followed by an analysis of the case studies. Research and sensitivity of the site informed the conceptual design process. The design process used the method of diagramming, mapping, sketching, and computer modelling as a tool of exploration for the conceptual development of the design.
Those theoretical and conceptual research concludes with a design proposition towards a marine park on the water featuring a float walkway, recreation, and culture interpretation amenities, providing access into the Waitematā Harbour for local and international visitors. The Marine Park of Auckland will provide opportunities for recognition of the cultural and natural heritage of the Waitematā Harbour, along with kayaking, entertaining, observation, leisure, and fishing hub across the harbour. The Marine Park is a unique place for all Aucklanders and visitors to Auckland, where we protect and express the harbour’s values and celebrate the Waitematā Harbour.
