Abstract:
Although theoretical and empirical efforts to understand the relationship between autobiographical memory and the self have been fruitful, many questions remain. This chapter examines the contributions of episodic and semantic forms of autobiographical memory to the self both in the present moment and over time. We outline our self and autobiographical memory model which we use as a framework to synthesize relevant neuropsychological and neuroimaging evidence. This synthesis illustrates the intricate, nuanced relationship between autobiographical memory and our sense of who we are.
