dc.description.abstract This chapter describes the need for an open source problem-solving environment for the geospatial community, and the efforts to meet this need with GeoVISTA Studio, an Open Source Java environment that provides tools for geovisualisation, knowledge discovery and analysis. The four-part architecture of Studio is presented, along with two case studies from Studio users. The conclusions summarize how and to what extent Studio meets its design criteria. en
