dc.description.abstract The main aim of this research project is to understand the way in which youth agency shapes or can impact on the political participation of Samoan and Tongan youth 18-29 years of age in national elections in south Auckland, Aotearoa and in Samoa and Tonga. the analysis of their political participation through the lens of youth agency provides a more holistic approach to expose the impact that structural factors (social, cultural, political, economic) have in the construction, contestation and negotiation of identities, roles, responsibilities and meanings in societies. These structural factors can either act as 'thickening' or 'thinning' agents on youth agency, thereby giving greater impetus and freedom to exert agency, or constraining these same opportunities by virtue of the environments in which young people operate within. en
