Abstract:
The effects of altered shore level, competition and predation on the zonation of three species of barnacle – Chamaesipho brunnea, Chamaesipho columna and Elminius plicatus – were studied. Experiments were carried out at Leigh, using cages on the shore.
Ch. Brunnea bred in spring and summer: Ch.columna and E. plicatus bred throughout the year, but settled irregularly. When protected from predators and from overgrowth by algae, all three species survived well as lower levels than normal. At higher levels neither E. plicatus no Ch. Columna survived all the year.
