Abstract:
An examination of a literary genre will always raise problems of definition. In this particular study – an examination of novels which include as one of their primary purposes the advocacy of a species of Socialism – the immediate problem centres on the question of what is meant by the term ‘Socialism’. Its limited meaning in Edwardian Britain in terms of practical politics will be discussed in the opening chapter: my concern here is a rather more limited one.
