dc.description.abstract Despite all romantic notions, the heart is a thermodynamic machine. It is fuelled by aerobic metabolism and, with each beat, it generates arterial pressure and ejects a volume of blood. It might seem logical that the energy used should be strictly proportional to the amount of work that the heart performs, but this is not so and we have yet to fully understand how it functions. en
