An extraordinary spatial experience while travelling through Italy forms the basis of this thesis - in an ordinary praying chamber one is drawn in to experience the mystical properties of space. The intrusion of sunlight into an otherwise silent room, caged up by iron gates, evokes a spiritual and emotional response within the subject. Drawing on the poetics of Louis Kahn and Luis Barragán, this thesis discusses the mystical properties of space as it is encountered by the human subject. Therapeutic Poetry is concerned with the emotive and investigates the psychological and philosophical elements of such architectural qualities. In particular, the thesis explores and develops the area of psychiatric rehabilitation in its relation to the topic of architectural intervention -by focusing on the mind itself and the introspective struggles and journeys of the from a semi-fictional patient's perspective. The concept of reconciling internal conflicts and achieving inner health, commonly found in the process of rehabilitation, will be the starting point to the research. A short definition of the term "rehabilitation" will provide a holistic approach towards the conception of the architectural aspect in this thesis. Rehabilitation: healing; place of rest; rejuvenation; recovery; restoration of form and function. The critical question is: How do spaces evoke deeper emotional responses in people? How can it be applied in a therapeutic manner? Its investigation and the design of the new healing spaces for psychiatric rehabilitation in Auckland Domain will be carried out through these areas: - The relationship between the interior/built environment and the exterior/natural environment - and their effect on the human psyche. - Architectural forms: mass, material and natural light - How do they work together to achieve a certain emotional response? - The role and significance of fundamental natural elements - water, earth, fire, air in a therapeutically designed environment. The processes and outcome of this research will be presented in a series of visual and literary narratives, both externally and internally sourced. Ultimately, Therapeutic Poetry seeks to interrogate the issue of spirituality on a highly personal, intimate yet universal level and the role architecture plays in this subject. |
