Pleyel’s extraordinary rise to international fame in the 1780s was due in no small measure to the frenzied piracy of his works. These illicit editions stimulated a second wave of activity in which publishers sought to meet the insatiable demand for new Pleyel works by issuing his compositions in arrangements and adaptations. Pleyel’s response to this phenomenon varied. He raged against the blatant ‘theft’ of the string quartets Opp.3 & 4 yet seems not to have taken action over the publication of unauthorized arrangements of his works. This paper considers patterns of piracy that evolved during the 1780s and 1790s and argues that the foundation of Maison Pleyel, which was motivated to a large extent by Pleyel’s desire to regain control of his own music, was only partially successful in halting the avalanche of illicit editions. It concludes that the rapid decline in Pleyel’s reputation in the second decade of the nineteenth century was due as much to chronic overexposure as changing musical fashions. |
